Now you maybe asking what is a DPF?

What is a Diesel Particulate Filter ( DPF ) and Diesel Oxidation Catalyst  ( DOC ) ?

DPF stands for Diesel  Particulate Filter. It is part of the emission controls of a diesel  engine. A DPF works in conjunction with the oxidation catalyst and EGR  valve to remove a majority of the NOx ( nitrogen oxide), particulate  matter and un-burned hydrocarbons from burned diesel fuel. Soot is a  natural byproduct from the combustion of diesel fuel. Inside the DPF is a  porous honeycomb structure that catches the soot as it passes through.  After the soot builds up over time, the onboard computer controls fuel  injection to allow un-burned fuel to enter the filter at measured  intervals where it flares off and generates increased temperatures that  incinerate the

accumulated soot.

DOC stands for  Diesel Oxidation Catalyst. The DOC is the first device in the after  treatment system.  It is a flow through filter that contains precious  metals to start the oxidation of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and  un-burned fuel and oil. Both the DOC and the DPF are honeycomb  ceramic filters.

Why Proper Maintenance of Your DPF & DOC is critical!

Accumulated soot creates back  pressure that will eventually lead to increased regeneration down time,  loss of horsepower, reduced fuel economy, filter damage and, ultimately,  engine damage.

Improper care of your DPF & DOC could result in:

  • Engine malfunction or breakdown

  • DPF warranty to be voided

  • Hefty fines due to your diesel vehicle engine to be non-compliant with air pollution laws ( EPA )

Proper care of you DPF & DOC would result in:

  • Increased fuel economy

  • Increased performance & horsepower

  • Reduced emissions (CO2 & NOx reduction)

  • Less downtime

  • Fewer regeneration's

  • Longer DPF life

  • Lower maintenance costs

  • Maximized cleaning intervals

What Is The Recommended Interval For Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaning

The interval for Diesel  Particulate Filter cleaning varies between manufacturers specification,  engine condition, duty cycle, and type of lube oil used in the engine.  Most manufacturers recommend cleaning the Diesel Particulate Filter once  per year or about every 1000 hours of engine operation. In some cases,  the required cleaning interval may be much shorter.  Diesel engines  which idle a lot or travel short distances such as school buses require  maintenance more often than a truck which operates mostly on the  highway. We recommend scheduled maintenance clean of the DPF & DOC  every 1000 hours or 100K miles.
